Anaglyphic Jean-Paul Sartre enjoys Swell 3D on his desktop computer

I would like to thank Écrans for choosing Swell 3D as their site of the day. Écrans is an online supplement to Libération, the Paris newspaper founded by Jean-Paul Sartre. Above is my anaglyphic rendition of Mr. Sartre enjoying Swell 3D on his desktop computer.

3-D anaglyph Land O'Lakes butter logo with the famous Indian maiden

I made a 3-D anaglyph out of the logo of Land O'Lakes butter, starring their beautiful Indian maiden, who has graced their packages since 1928. From now through October 15, Land O'Lakes is giving away free butter. Buy a pound of their new "half-stick" butter, and mail in the UPC and your receipt with the rebate coupon (a printable PDF), and they will refund your money (up to $4.39).

I am not publishing this at the request of Land O'Lakes, nor am I being compensated to promote their butter. Rather, this is merely a sympathetic response to francophone blogger Kevin, who likes everything about Swell 3D, except that it is written in English, and provides no free butter:

Seul bémol, le site est en anglais mais bon on peut pas avoir le beurre et l’argent du beurre.

Merci, Kevin! I have no plans to stop writing in English, but I'm happy to provide the butter free of charge.

OCCC Student looks at Swell 3D

The Pioneer is the student newspaper at Oklahoma City Community College, where I am an adjunct professor of Graphic Communications. On page six of this week's issue is a story by Matt Montgomery about Swell 3D, headlined "Professor ventures into 3-D world."

The lovely photo above, of student Mikaela Allen enjoying Swell 3D, accompanied the story, but I converted it to 3-D here.

To Matt and the Pioneer staff, thank you for the story!

The resurgence of 3-D movies is official now; Time says so.

Time magazine illustration by Ellen Weinstein

Cover of Time magazine, August 25, 2008 issueRebecca Winters Keegan, reporting in the August 25 issue of Time magazine, says 3-D movies are "Coming Back at You":

The first feature films shot and shown in digital 3-D -- bugs-in-space toon Fly Me to the Moon, Brendan Fraser's volcano-diving Journey to the Center of the Earth and concert movies by U2 and Miley Cyrus -- leaped into moviegoers' laps this year. In 2009 at least 10 more 3-D movies will arrive, including James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar, DreamWorks' Monsters vs. Aliens and Pixar's Up.

"Over the next couple of years, we'll get our Gone With the Wind and our Citizen Kane," says Michael Lewis, CEO of Real D, a company that equips movie theaters with digital 3-D technology.

Well, that's something to look forward to.
