From Mr. Patrick Swinnea, a video producer and game developer in Colorado, comes 3D Manifesto, a blog about 3-D photography, cinema, technology, and related topics. Just launched last month, 3D Manifesto promises to become a valuable and enjoyable resource for the 3D enthusiast.

I especially like Patrick’s own anaglyph photography. Don’t miss his Toys and Models gallery, which is great fun. And of course I appreciate how he adds depth to the website design elements themselves (page backgrounds and certain headlines) as I have done at Swell 3D.

Today, Feb. 15, is the feast of Saints Faustinus and Jovita, two brothers executed by Emperor Hadrian in 120 A.D. This painting by Vincenzo Foppa shows them standing beside the Virgin Mary and Christ child. A great study in perspective, it was fun to convert to 3-D. Walls, canopies, pedestals, columns, windows, with all those angles and planes converging this way and that. (You can see it even bigger on my Flickr page.)

The French synth band M83 released this single, “We Own the Sky,” in December 2008. Rather than produce a music video the conventional way, they held a contest, soliciting videos of this song from many entrants.

This entry (which did not win the contest), a gorgeous 3-D anaglyph video directed by Warren Kommers, contains some stunning shots. The girl on the mountain, overlooking the city, is perfectly done. The video looks quite good here in the embedded player, but if you want to see it in all its glory, you should go to the YouTube page and watch it in HD. Five minutes.

This is what Doctor Who would look like in 3-D, if they made Doctor Who in 3-D. Sadly, they do not. I am so, so, sorry.

I made this frame from The End of Time into a 3-D anaglyph myself, with a depth map. Great episode. If you haven’t seen it, you should. And if you have, you should see it again.

Nicole Lindner, a clothier hailing from Chesterfield, UK MI*, made this whimsical dress patterned after 3-D glasses (the British kind, with the green lens). It’s a fun outfit for a costume ball or a romantic night on the town. The dress is not mass-produced, she makes limited batches and sells them on Etsy.com. She’s sold out now, but maybe she’ll make more. Because I have some suggestions for the next round.

The glasses seem backwards to me. If the notch in the side is supposed to represent the nose of the glasses, then shouldn’t the red lens be on top? Because if you rotate a pair of 3D glasses 90 degrees counter-clockwise, the red lens is on top. Unless I’m wrong.

Also, I think I would like it even better if the lenses were transparent. But maybe that’s just me.

Apparently this photo was taken almost a year ago, but it’s the first I’ve seen it. It’s President and Mrs. Obama wearing 3-D glasses in the White House theater. They wore them to watch a commercial that aired during the Superbowl.

That’s great. But I’m thinking, couldn’t the president of the United States get some real Pro-X glasses? Maybe I’ll send him a pair.

From Stefan Voigt, David Shelton, and Stefan Weinberg of Mainz, Germany, comes this happy little 3-minute movie about two robots who live inside a television. When the monitor glass breaks, they are introduced to the world outside.

As I watched, I kept thinking of Plato's Republic, wherein Socrates explained that we are all living as in a cave, where all we can see are projections of light and shadows on one wall. And Plato never even had a TV.

Today, of course, was International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Although I don't really have any 3-D pirate-related things to post right now, I do have a seafaring romance between a ferry pilot and a garbage scow hand.

"Scowboat Sadie" was a 3-D parody of the popular "romance" genre of comic books, published in Whack Comics Number 1, October 1953, edited by Norman Maurer and Joe Kubert.

There are two other great stories from this issue online, "The 3-D-Ts" and "Dirty Mouse."

At 3DPregnancy, one of the ParentsConnect family of websites maintained by Nickelodeon, you can view 3D illustrations of gestating babies in utero. There are 42 images, one for each week of pregnancy, showing embryonic and fetal development. (The picture above is the 39th week.)
